The oscillator is locked to the reference source, and the output frequency is controlled by adjusting the VCO frequency.When the desired output frequency cannot be generated directly from the reference clock, a frequency multiplier can be used. A frequency multiplier works by taking the input reference frequency and multiplying it by an integer. This is done by taking the reference clock and dividing it by a divisor.
