The working principle of the SI5383A-D07172-GM is based on the same Phase Locked Loop (PLL) principle used by all other clock generators. The PLL consists of a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and a phase/frequency detector (PFD) whose outputs are connected to each other. The input reference clock leads to a signal on its input and the feedback signal from the VCO output is compared with the input signal.
When the two signals match, the current generated by the PFD maintains the frequency and phase of the VCO output, producing an output signal (Output Clock) with the same itemization as the input signal – both frequency and phase. The frequency of the output clock is adjustable by varying the supply voltage of the VCO.
The SI5383A-D07172-GM includes a range of options to help customers to easily customize the output clock. Users can configure the chip to select the output type, spread-spectrum, frequency range and output division ratio. This allows for a great deal of flexibility in the clock frequency and types.
In addition, the SI5383A-D07172-GM provides an optional Spread Spectrum Clock Generator (SSCG) mode which reduces the clock emissions by spreading the clock spectrum across a wider frequency range. It is compliant with EMI Reduction regulations and supports the most stringent system requirements.
To configure the SI5383A-D07172-GM, customers can use Silicon Labs’ ClockBuilder Pro software. This software helps customers to easily create and customize the clock setup to match their applications. Customers can also use any of Silicon Labs\' EFM32 or EFM8 families of microcontrollers to use as a development platform when using ClockBuilder Pro.
