The SI5395K-A-GM is a clock generator and frequency synthesizer from Silicon Labs’ MultiSynth SI53xx family. This family of devices includes an oscillator, a phase-locked loop (PLL) and an integrated voltage-controlled voltage (VCXO) oscillator, which provides flexibility for a variety of applications ranging from low jitter clock and frequency synthesizer to general purpose clock generation and synchronization. This product is suitable for applications from consumer to communications and design-in friendly with ease-of-use along with a wide range of options and features to meet requirements.

The SI5395K-A-GM provides a crystal-based solution with +/-25 part per million accuracy and five different output combinations in either LVDS, LVPECL or HCSL. To further maximize flexibility, the SI5395K-A-GM offers integrated frequency translation and jitter attenuation with selectable prescalers, fractional-N synthesis up to 0.23 picoseconds and programmable input and output frequency. The fast locking time and low power consumption of the SI5395K-A-GM make it ideal for clock generation and frequency synthesizer applications.

Working Principle

The SI5395K-A-GM begins with an oscillator that generates a non-stabilized frequency determined by the external crystal. The oscillator’s frequency is then used as the reference frequency by the PLL. The PLL then compares its output frequency with the reference frequency and adjusts itself to synchronize with the reference frequency. Once synchronized, the PLL adjusts its output accordingly so that the translated output frequency matches the desired frequency. The output frequency can be pulled up or down as needed to match its specific output frequency requirements.

The SI5395K-A-GM also includes integrated logic for selecting input and output frequencies and a jitter attenuator to make the PLL more stable. This reduces jitter on the output and ensures a steady output frequency. The VCXO inside the device further adds stability to the PLL, which in turn helps keep the output frequency at the desired steady state.

Application Field

The SI5395K-A-GM is suitable for applications from consumer to communications, such as digital TVs, computers, digital signage, cable tuners, DVD recorders, navigation systems, and audio products. Additionally, it is also widely used in optical network infrastructures, radar systems, test and measurement equipment, and broadcast equipment. Having a wide output support, including LVDS, LVPECL and HCSL, the SI5395K-A-GM can also be used in applications where precise clock timing is critical, such as high-speed serial links and clock buffers.

The SI5395K-A-GM is designed to meet industrial and system requirements with a small 3.2mm x 3.2mm automotive-grade, TDFN package and commercial operating temperature range from -40C to +85C. Having an integrated LVDS output and programmable frequency, this device makes for a configuration friendly design, as only external components necessary for operation of the PLL are a crystal at the oscillator and pull up/down resistors at the output.

The SI5395K-A-GM also offers many features and options, both hardware and software configurable, which make it suitable for a wide variety of system configurations and requirements.
