Working Principle

The SI9118DY-T1-E3 switching controller works by continuously modulating the duty cycle of an internal high side and low side MOSFET switch in order to achieve the desired output voltage. The switching controller operates in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) or continuous conduction mode (CCM) depending on the load conditions. The MOSFETs enable current to flow through the input or output capacitors when they are turned on and prevent the current flow when they are turned off. The period of the switch is governed by the feedback circuitry which monitors the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle accordingly.

In case of over-voltage, the internal voltage comparator of the controller monitors the output voltage and shuts down the output voltage if the voltage exceeds the maximum limit by a pre-defined level. Undervoltage shutdown is also included which will shutdown the output voltage when a predetermined voltage threshold is reached. In case of open loop applications, without feedback circuitry, the SI9118DY-T1-E3 controller operates in fixed frequency mode and the frequency can be set using the control pin.
