The Voltage Regulator Linear series includes the SI91871DMP-25-E3. This Power Supply Specialists Manufacturing (PSSM) product is an advanced high efficiency low-noise linear regulator which combines improved power conversion efficiency, low output noise, high temperature operating range and excellent output voltage accuracy for systems with operating voltages from1.8V to 6V and output currents up to 500mA.

With the included enhanced performance and extended operating temperature range, the SI91871DMP-25-E3 is suitable for a multitude of applications, including PDAs, cellular phones, notebook computers, computer peripherals and digital cameras. This contains a V OUT linear regulator inside, and the voltage is regulated according to the input voltage through the emitter-coupled transistor. It has various features such as low operating current, low quiescent current, fast transient response, low noise, high accuracy, and low amplitude of drop-out voltage. In addition, it can work stably in a wide temperature range.

Application Field

The SI91871DMP-25-E3 is designed to provide excellent output voltage accuracy and low output noise for general purpose voltage regulation applications. Working Principle

The SI91871DMP-25-E3 is a high efficiency, low noise, linear regulator. It utilizes two N-channel enhancement-mode metal-oxide semiconductor (MOSFETs) to regulate the output voltage. The voltage regulator includes a voltage reference, an error amplifier, a driver and two MOSFETs. The reference voltage is set to 1.8V. The MOSFETs are operated in a push pull configuration to regulate the output voltage. The output voltage is determined by the reference voltage, the current passing through the regulated load, and the resistance of the feedback resistor.

The error amplifier Error Amp1 compares the reference voltage and the output voltage. The output voltage is controlled to follow the reference voltage, as the error amplifier modifies the bias current to the driver. The driver amplifies the output of the error amplifier and sources and sinks current to the MOSFETs to change the voltage across the regulated load. The regulated load will draw more current when the output voltage is low, and the current will be decreased when the output voltage is high. The output voltage will be regulated to a stability value determined by the reference voltage and the feedback resistor.

The SI91871DMP-25-E3 has several features to ensure best performance and robustness. These include over-current protection and over-temperature protection. The over-current protection will monitor the current inside the MOSFETs and turn off the output when the current exceeds the nominal operating current. The over-temperature protection monitors the junction temperature of the device and turns off the output when the temperature exceeds the maximum rated junction temperature.
