DC-DC converters contain a variety of power electronic circuits that convert or regulate “direct current” (DC) input voltage levels to a higher, lower, or isolated voltage level desired by a load. SIL10E-05S1V2-V is one of the DC-DC converter whose applications and working principle will be discussed in this paper.

Application field

SIL10E-05S1V2-V is optimized for applications such as driving automotive door mirror actuators, robot arm actuators, window shade actuators, hydraulic pump systems, air conditioning systems, and camera lenses. It is also suitable to be used in remote networking applications such as Wi-Fi routers and gateways, power injectors, mesh routers, video streaming devices, and industrial field bus devices such as CAN bus, CANopen, and EtherCAT.

It is supplied in a 9.4 mm x 7.9 mm surface mount package that is compatible with lead-free board soldering processes. It is RoHS compliant and designed to meet the requirments of ASIL/SIL3 standards. Moreover, the SIL10E-05S1V2-V features wide input voltage range from 9.5 to 30V and output voltage range from 1.2 to 31V. It has typical efficiency up to 97% and maximum output power of 7.6W.

Additionally, it has protection functions including input deviation protection, current limiting, foldback current limiting, thermal protection, and output overvoltage / short-circuit protection. It features high accuracy, high reliability, and low power dissipation.

Working Principle

The working principle of SIL10E-05S1V2-V is based on the buck-boost converter topology. The buck-boost converter utilizes a voltage step-up transformer along with a bridge rectifier and a switching power supply. It can efficiently maintain a regulated output voltage independent of input voltage changes.

It starts by rectifying and smoothing the input voltage. The transformer in the converter uses a primary and secondary winding to increase or decrease the magnitude of the voltage. The power supplied by the transformer is multiplied by a switch that works as either an inductor or a capacitor. This is the main element of the whole system as it controls the output voltage and current of the converter.

The outputs of the buck-boost converter are filtered again and brought to the actual load voltage by the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator functions on an error amplifier which continuously compares the actual load voltage to its reference voltage.
