Thyristors - SCRsA silicon controlled rectifier, also known as a thyristors is an electrical device used in many application fields; from low voltage to power requirements. The SCR consists of a four-layer, three-terminal device with an anode, cathode and control gate. The anode and cathode are both made from p-n layers, and the control gate is made from a p-layer. This makes the SCR a thyristor, and it is used to control the flow of electricity.The key component of the SCR is the semiconductor material, usually silicon, which is sandwiched between two electrodes, the anode and cathode. This basic component allows the SCR to control the amount of current which passes through it. When there is a positive voltage applied between the anode and the control gate, the SCR triggers into the "on" state, allowing a current to flow across the voltage. This current is limited by the SCR\'s internal resistance and is known as the "holding current". In the "off" state, the SCR is closed and no current may pass across it. In order to switch the SCR "off" again, a negative voltage must be applied to the control gate. This triggers the SCR to open again and resume its "off" state. This function sets the SCR apart from other forms of switches or relays since the current flow can be controlled without the use of a mechanical switch.
