Thyristors - SCRs
SK025NTP is a four-quadrant phase controlled thyristor which belongs to the family of SCRs (silicon controlled rectifier) and is used for power control in lighting and industrial automation, the source of power being single or three phase AC. It is specifically designed for Traic control applications.
The SK025NTP works by switching the current flow in one direction upon receiving a gate pulse. It is triggered when a gate current of 15-20 mA is provided and can be turned OFF by reverse bias or open circuit at the gate terminal. The device is composed of four layers of silicon: two P-type layers and two N-type layers. In off-state, when the anode voltage is greater than the cathode voltage, the thyristor remains in the blocked state. This is the OFF-state or a non-conducting state. When the gate receives a pulse of the appropriate value, the thyristor switches the current from an open state to a closed state and thereby have a low on-state voltage drop.
The SK025NTP is used for applications such as Motor control, universal motor sets, Uninterruptible power supplies, High frequency switching and light dimmers. It is preferred for current driven applications as it can handle voltage up to 800V and can activate very small loads. The triggering is also done at lower current hence it can save energy by energy input limitation.
The working principle of SK025NTP is two stage. Firstly, the small and constant gate current of 15-20mA, referred to as biasing,(stored charges on the gate) starts conducting, with the reverse biasing across the anode and cathode. Secondly, when the biasing is given, the gate triggers the thyristor by providing the required amount of gate current and hence converting the device from a blocking state to a conducting state. This is known as the firing mode, which is generated with the triac current to the required value.
The other advantages of this thyristor are fast switch time, low voltage drop across the device and low power dissipation regardless of the ambient temperature.
The SK025NTP is suitable for very high power applications due to its ability to withstand inrush current. In this field it is widely used for controlling lamps and other AC motors. The SK025NTP is also used in power converters, power supplies and other power electronics applications. The thyristor can be used to vary the speed of AC induction motors, to control the power in welding control, to vary the brightness of lighting, to control the temperature and to control the speed of motorized fans.
