Inrush Current Limiters (ICLs) are used to control the flow of large electrical currents into power supply circuitry. Low ripple current, soft start capabilities, high surge current capabilities, and a “constant output voltage over a wide temperature range” are all important characteristics of ICLs; and the SL15 60004, specifically, is an excellent ICL for many applications.
The SL15 60004 is a semiconductor-type ICL, composed of an SCR (silicon-controlled rectifier) and a biasing diode. To understand how the SL15 60004 ICL works, it is helpful to know a bit about the SCR in particular. An SCR is a three-terminal device made of a very “thin layer of P-type and N-type semiconductor materials.” It is composed of two terminals and one gate, which is an external control pin. When no voltage applied to the gate, the SCR remains off and no current flows. When a voltage is applied to the gate, the SCR turns on and current begins to flow.
This is largely how the SL15 60004 ICL works. Since the SCR and diode are connected in a parallel combination, the diode restricts the current flowing through the SCR, providing it with current limiting capabilities. When the voltage applied to the gate is high enough, the SCR turns on and current begins to flow. The ICL monitors the current over time and will then start to drop off the applied voltage as the current goes above a certain level. This ensures that the current flowing into the SL15 60004 ICL stays at a safe level and does not exceed the predetermined maximum.
In short, the SL15 60004 is an ideal device for applications that require reliable, low ripple, and low surge current control. It can be used to control the current going into power supply circuits, providing a soft start capability as well as an output voltage that is constant over a wide temperature range.
