SL38160ZI is an integrated phase-locked loop (PLL) clock generator from Intersil Corporation. This device combines a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with Phase/Frequency Detector (PFD) and Charge Pump (CP) in a single package for ease of design and low cost. It can be used for frequency synthesis applications such as Clock Generation, Clock Distribution, Serial to Parallel Conversion, Clock Multiplication and Frequency Division.
The SL38160ZI is available in a 14-Lead (MSOP) package. It has an internal VCO with adjustable frequency range from 2.8 to 3.2 GHz and a reference frequency range from 200 MHz to 1.25 GHz. It offers excellent phase noise performance and very low jitter. It supports several output formats such as LVDS, LVPECL, HCSL and HCSL.
The SL38160ZI uses a PLL architecture and operates in frequency synchronization mode. The PLL works by comparing the frequency and phase of the output signal with the reference signal. This comparison is done by the Phase/Frequency Detector (PFD) which produces a control signal based on the comparison. This control signal is then used to adjust the frequency of the VCO to match the reference signal.
The output of the VCO is then used as the feedback signal to the PFD. The PFD will continuously monitor the phase and frequency of the output signal and adjust the VCO frequency to match the reference signal. The Charge Pump (CP) then converts the control signal from the PFD into a current which is then used to drive the loop filter which is used to set the VCO frequency.
The SL38160ZI is a versatile device and can be used for many different applications such as clock generation, clock distribution, serial to parallel conversion, clock multiplication and frequency division. It has excellent phase noise performance and very low jitter. It is ideal for use in communications, data centers, and computing systems.
