Magnetic Sensors - Switches (Solid State) are used in a variety of applications. The SM453R is a type of Magnetic Sensor Switch in a solid state package, meaning that its components maintain a stable electric field for a long period of time. The SM453R is a static sensing device composed of a Hall element and two permanent magnets that measure magnetic fields in both directions for changes in polarity.
The SM453R is made up of two components, an open frame sensor of ferromagnetic material, and a rare earth magnet. The open frame sensor is soldered to a circuit board and positioned in the free-air environment in the presence of a powerful magnetic field. A rare earth magnet is held securely in a hole cut into the sensor package, and the combination of two magnets creates the magnetic field that the sensor will detect. The two magnets have opposite polarities and an alternating polarity signal is generated as they pass over the Hall element. This alternating polarity signal can be used by a processor or control system to identify the location and severity of the magnetic field.
The SM453R is designed to be able to detect very weak magnetic fields, as low as 0.1 milli Tesla (mT) in both directions. For comparison, a powerful neodymium magnet measures approximately 5.4 mT, and the earth’s magnetic field is approximately 0.3 mT. In addition, the SM453R has a linear output of 0.2 - 4.8V, allowing the use of a regulator to operate other components from a stable input voltage. The maximum current draw is also relatively low, maxing out at 10mA.
As Magnetic Sensor Switches, the SM453R can be used in a wide range of applications, including door and window protection, hall current detection, automatic fire suppression, and vehicle detection. In the home security sector, it is used in intrusion detection systems to detect when a window or door has been breached. In the automotive sector, it can be used to detect the current in the drive motor, or be used to trigger an alarm system when a vehicle is entering or exiting a secure area. In industrial applications, the SM453R can be used to detect the presence of combustible gases and trigger a fire suppression system, and also detect the presence of metallic objects such as scrap metal.
The SM453R offers a range of features that make it suitable for use in a range of applications, including a wide operating temperature range, high linearity, and low power consumption. In addition, its small footprint makes it easy to mount on surfaces with limited space. The SM453R is a cost effective solution for sensing a wide range of magnetic fields, making it a popular choice for applications needing reliable magnetic field detection.
