SM6020L

SM6020L is an LED driving IC with integrated offline CC/CV buck converter, it is specifically designed for LED lighting applications, such as downlight, panel light, spot light, etc. As a reference IC, it can drive up to 5W LED load, and the IC is featured with high power factor, low power consumption, low standby power, excellent EMI performance, and under-voltage protection.

Application Field

SM6020L is featured with flexibility and can be used in all types of LED illumination, for use with lamps such as incandescent, halogen, T5, T8, CFL, and LED. It is recommended for single-stage LED lighting applications including recessed lighting, downlights, spot lights, desk lamps, reading lamps, and other lightings, and it offers up to 98% efficiency with minimal power loss.

The SM6020L is also optimized for dimmable LED applications, and can be used to control dimming ratios from 0%-100% with minimal efficiency loss. This makes it suitable for applications such as eliminating flicker or enabling the user to dim the light according to the ambient lighting. In addition, the device provides protection against over-voltage and over-temperature, and all other safety and reliability assurance specified for LED lighting.

Working Principle

The SM6020L features an internal offline buck converter, which operates on the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM). When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the circuit charges a storage capacitor with the excess power and reduce it gradually. When the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the circuit discharges the capacitor to meet the load demand. This process is controlled using a microcontroller and optimizes the LED output for consistent brightness.

SM6020L also features a synchronous rectifier, which allows it to achieve high efficiency over a wide input voltage range. The synchronous rectifier uses the inductor as the active switcher, which eliminates the losses usually associated with the diode rectifier, leading to higher efficiency over the entire range. This allows the LED to operate at higher current levels, resulting in brighter light.
