Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs, also referred to as "TransZorbs"), are protective devices designed to reduce or eliminate the risk of electrical transients. The SM6T12A-E3/5B is a commonly used two terminal, low capacitance, high surge current, TVS- Diode specifically designed for applications such as telecom, data communications, networking and power systems. It offers fast acting protection by clamping transients up to 6kV and 12A of surge current per line, and has a maximum breakdown voltage of 6V to prevent damage to vulnerable semiconductor components.

The SM6T12A-E3/5B is typically used to protect systems from transient over-voltage, such as those caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning, load switching, or induced voltage transients. It can be used in a wide range of environments including industrial, automotive, consumer, military, satellite, wireless and other high-speed data signaling systems. The device works by clamping transients and absorbing high-level energy instantaneously, thus preventing damage to the vulnerable circuits.

The SM6T12A-E3/5B is capable of operating over a wide range of temperatures from -55 to +175 degrees Celsius and has a temperature coefficient of 0.3 percent/K. The rated working power dissipation is 6W and the peak pulse power dissipation is 250W. The device’s surge handling capacity is rated to 12A with a peak pulse amplitude of 1,750A. It is also compatible with high surge currents up to 3,000A. The device has a modest 1.3nH maximum capacitance and a low clamping voltage of 6V. In addition, it has a fast response time of 75ns and provides superior protection even in high transients.

The operation of the SM6T12A-E3/5B is based on the principle of a conventional diode. When a transient over-voltage is detected, the device acts as a high speed rectifier, allowing current to flow from the anode to the cathode. This current limits the voltage across the vulnerable device. When the transient voltage is removed, the current also stops flowing and the device returns to its normal state. By doing so, the SM6T12A-E3/5B protects the system from possible damage.
