TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes, or simply called surge suppressors, belong to a family of special components used to protect circuits or entire systems against overvoltage transients. A surge suppressor is made of several TVS diodes connected together in an arrangement that allows the suppression of transient voltages. The SM6T15CA-E3/52 is one such device.

The SM6T15CA-E3/52 is a Pb-Free, low-capacitance, bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor diode specifically designed to protect sensitive electronic circuitry from damage due to overvoltage transients. The E3/52 provides a low turn-on voltage of only 8 V for 6 V breakdown, and is suitable for a wide variety of power supply and telephone, cable, Ethernet, data communications, automotive, consumer, and industrial applications. The device is packaged in a Dual In-line Package (DIP) and is available from various manufacturers in a range of voltages from 6 V to 220 V with reverse breakdown voltages ranging from 6 V to 480 V.

The SM6T15CA-E3/52 consists of two sets of series-connected PN junction diodes arranged in a single or double package and is designed for bidirectional operation. The majority charge carriers are electrons in the n-type material and holes in the p-type material. During normal working conditions, the junction is reverse-biased and no current flows through the device due to the potential energy barrier created by the junction. However, when an overvoltage transient is applied to the device, the junction breaks down and current begins to flow through the device as minority charge carriers (holes in the n-type material and electrons in the p-type material) are swept across the junction. This reduction in the potential energy barrier effectively lowers the forward voltage drop, thereby providing protection against overvoltage transients.

The SM6T15CA-E3/52 is designed to protect a wide range of applications requiring voltage overshoot protection. It has been designed for a variety of telecom, industrial, automotive, and consumer products. It is suitable for use in applications in which voltage transients of up to 48 V are expected. It can also be used as a voltage clamp for unbalanced lines where two different voltage levels are present. Furthermore, it can also be used as a transient voltage protection device, with excellent noise immunity and surge current handling capabilities.
