TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes are special protection diodes used to defend computer hardware and electronic systems from overvoltage conditions such as electrostatic discharge or voltage spikes.  The SM6T7V5A-E3/5B is a single bi-directional TVS diode of 600W peak pulse power dissipation with low clamping voltage. It is a high-reliability, low profile device that is designed to provide protection from transients on two isolated I/O lines, on affected equipment, and in telecommunication networks.

Application Field

The SM6T7V5A-E3/5B is a protection device designed for use in all types of electronics, including computers, digital vehicles, navigation systems, power tools, modems, and communications networks. Working Principle

When a transient voltage exceeds the peak pulse power thresholds, the SM6T7V5A-E3/5B usually triggers and conducts current. Its avalanche breakdown eliminates the need for a series resistor that is used for most lower power unclamped TVS devices. The device features ultra-low forward bias voltage, good clamping characteristics, fast response time, and a very low let-through voltage.

When an overvoltage condition occurs, it monitors and detects the voltage level using an ESD diode that is connected in reverse bias. When the voltage exceeds the specified threshold, a large current is triggered into the diode, causing a high voltage breakdown of the avalanche effect. The diode temporarily clamps the voltage and then reduces it to a set threshold where it holds. This process prevents the voltage from travelling further into the system.

The SM6T7V5A-E3/5B device includes several external components to ensure stable operation, including ESD diodes for transient protection, series resistors, bypass capacitors, and a snubber circuit for reducing the reverse voltage transients.
