TVS diodes, also referred to as transient voltage suppressors, are used to protect electrical components and circuits from destructive voltage transients or surges due to lightning or induced electrical interference. In particular, the SMA5J28HE3/61 is designed to protect automotive systems, controllers, and other industrial applications from damage due to power-supply over-voltage, electrostatic discharge, and lightning surges.The SMA5J28HE3/61 is a bidirectional, low-capacitance, and moderate-speed transient voltage suppressor. It has a maximum peak pulse power rating of 2.93 kW at 8/20 μs and a clamping voltage of 52.2 V (typical). This device offers an excellent clamping performance with very low leakage currents. It is rated at an operating temperature range of -55°C to 150°C and has a fast response time of 0.05 μs.The main benefit of the SMA5J28HE3/61 is its ability to provide excellent transient voltage suppression. It functions by diverting and dissipating transient voltage pulses to ground through a process known as avalanche breakdown. When the voltage across the TVS exceeds its reverse breakdown voltage, it turns on quickly and begins to momentarily conduct current, thus reducing the peak voltage. This dissipates the transient voltage pulse, providing protection to the component or circuit.The SMA5J28HE3/61 also offers a fast response time, which ensures fast protection of sensitive components. This device also has a low capacitance of 1.3 pF across the terminals, which helps limit switching and signal distortion. Additionally, its low leakage current and low capacitance help keep circuit power losses low.The SMA5J28HE3/61 is most suitable for automotive and industrial applications. It is used in power supplies, microprocessors, high-speed processor and logic interfaces, industrial data networks, controllers, motor control systems, signal transmission lines, and other similar applications.
