TVS Diodes are one of the essential electronic components used in various types of electrical and electronic equipment. They are used to protect equipment from overvoltage surges. One such product is the SMAJ16A-M3/61 Dual Descriptor Bi-directional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS). The device is designed to drain off any excess voltage or transient current obtained from fast rise times and reduce the energy of an overvoltage event to a harmless level.The SMAJ16A-M3/61 TVS is rated at 16A with a peak pulse power dissipation of 1320W and a stand-off voltage of 16V. The device is available with various mounting options such as SMD, DO-214AB, SOD-323 and SOT-323 packages. The device features an ultra-low capacitance of 0.3 pF and low clamping voltage of 16V which allows it to perform optimally even under extreme environmental conditions.The working principle of the SMAJ16A-M3/61 TVS is based on the Avalanche Diode principal. When an excess voltage current or transient flows into the device, it is clamped to the breakdown voltage. As the voltage increases, the current passing through the clamp also increases. This current heats up the internal diode, causes electron-hole pairs to collide and get absorbed, thus providing a partial breakdown of the junction. As the voltage further increases, the current then passes through the avalanche region, thus providing protection to the device from any further damage.The SMAJ16A-M3/61 TVS is ideally suited for a wide range of applications such as in mobile phones, laptops, Information displays, automotive electronics, High-end audio equipment and many more. It can also be used as an ESD protection device in industrial automation and medical equipments.
