The SMB8J20C-E3/5B is a unidirectional device, meaning that it is designed to protect against overvoltage events when the voltage increases above its breakdown voltage (5.1V). It typically has a 5-8 A peak pulse current capability at 10/1000 μs pulse width. The device is designed to clamp the voltage to the designated level when an overvoltage event occurs. This helps to protect downstream devices by limiting the peak voltage of an incident overvoltage outburst.
