TVS Diodes have been in the forefront of protecting electronic circuits against voltage transients for decades. They are components specifically designed to protect circuits against transients that exceed the power or junction-temperature ratings of the protected component.
Recently, VISHAY has released the SMB8J28CHE3/52 – the 8th addition to its 2nd-generation Dvs2T series of transient voltage suppressors. This device offers a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +175°C and a fast response time of 150 ns. Additionally, it has a low breakdown voltage of 8 V.
The SMB8J28CHE3/52 is designed for use in TVS diodes applications such as portable applications, consumer electronic appliances, automotive systems, LED lighting, and industrial equipment.
In general, when subjected to high electrical stress, the SMB8J28CHE3/52 stands up to 1,000W of power and a surge current of 6A (10×1000µs). The combination of these features makes it one of the most versatile and best performing TVS diodes on the market.
This TVS diode also features an unbeatable combination of low clamping voltage and low operating voltage. The low clamping voltage of 8V significantly reduces the risk of system damage as a result of overvoltage transient events. And the low operating voltage of the device means it consumes only a fraction of the power of a standard TVS diode.
At the heart of the SMB8J28CHE3/52 is its overvoltage protection working principle. The TVS diode works by acting like a fast-acting switch when an overvoltage occurs. When an overvoltage occurs, the diode acts like a shunt and sends the current away from the protected device, thus preventing the device from damage. Additionally, the low clamping voltage of the diode helps in reducing the excess voltage.
The SMB8J28CHE3/52 is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free. It is also lead (Pb)-free and adheres to the Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
