The SMBJ350CATR is a Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode designed to protect against high voltage transients. It is designed to help safeguard sensitive electronic circuits from power supply and signal line transients. The main feature of the SMBJ350CATR is its wide operating voltage range of 5.0V to 350V with a breakdown voltage of 350V. It has a very fast clamping response time of less than 1.0 nano second and a peak power dissipation capability of 500Watts. Additionally, the part features low clamping factor to provide the best possible protection against transients.
The SMBJ350CATR works on the principle of avalanche breakdown. When an external voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, electrons are accelerated by the electric field and collide with other atoms creating electron-hole pairs. This is known as avalanche breakdown. Once the breakdown occurs, the current is amplified by the avalanche effect and the device starts to conduct. The diode is then able to protect the circuit from the transient voltage. The device will continue to conduct and absorb the transient until the voltage drops below its breakdown voltage.
In addition to its wide operating voltage range, the SMBJ350CATR is also able to provide high surge capability with a Peak Pulse Power of 500Watts. This makes it very effective in protecting a wide variety of circuits from SCR crow bar circuits to generator coils and ESD protection. It is also designed to have low clamping voltage for better protection against transient voltage.
