SMBJ5949AE3/TR13 is a member of the Diodes – Zener – Single product family. It is a low-voltage bi-directional device applicable for the protection of sensitive components from transients produced by inductive loads. The device offers a 5.6 V Zener voltage and 5 mA maximum current.
The device consists of two back-to-back Zeners with a central cathode and an anode at each side. The Zeners as well as the integrated protector protect against transient induced voltages up to 65 V (Clamping Voltage). When non-normal conditions happen, like an electrical overstress, these two Zeners will conduct equal current and limit the voltage to the Zener breakdown voltage.
The SMBJ5949AE3/TR13 offers excellent clamping capability and high surge capability, making it suitable for use in a range of applications that require transient overvoltage protection. By coupling together a fast-reacting zener diode and a fast-acting PN junction diode, it provides efficient, cost-effective protection against transients in applications such as computer peripherals, industrial control systems and commercial AC power supplies.
It offers excellent clamping ability and high surge capability, making it suitable for high speed logic applications and telephone line protection. Due to its small footprint, the SMBJ5949AE3/TR13 is particularly suitable for surface mount applications. Moreover, it is RoHS compliant and is 100% matte-tin (Sn) plated for reliable soldering.
The Zener diode\'s basic working principle is based on the reverse-biasing p-n junction diode. The N-type (p-type) layer is connected to the cathode (anode) and allows the diode to be forward-biased. When the diode is reversed biased, the depletion zone width between the p-n junction increases, allowing more electrons to move in the reverse-bias direction. This results in the formation of negative (positive) charge carriers at the junction due to the reduction (increase) of the depletion width. Due to the negative (positive) charge carriers, the diode can now be said to be \'forward-biased\' and will start conducting current. This is the working principle behind the Zener diode.
The SMBJ5949AE3/TR13 is also used in low voltage switching applications as it will provide over-voltage protection. It can be used to protect a single circuit or multiple circuits in applications such as modems, networking equipment and data lines. Additionally, it can be used to replace fuses and thermal cut outs in automotive applications.
