Introduction

TVS diodes, a form of transil diode, offer extremely fast response protection against high voltage transient pulses. A wide range of these devices are available with various voltage and power ratings to fit diverse applications in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics industry.SMBJ90D-M3/H is a part of TVS diodes family from NXP Semiconductor, which is designed to protect voltage sensitive components against transient overvoltage events up to 900 V. Basic Features

Operating with a wide -55℃ ~ 175℃ temperature range, the SMBJ90D-M3/H TVS diode features low operating and clamping voltage, fast response time (less than 1.0 ns) and excellent surge protection capability from ESD, lightning, and transients. It can be used to protect from transients in both AC and DC lines, and have multi-strike capability. It also has a low capacitance to minimize any signal distortion. The SMBJ90D-M3/H, has a RoHS compliant, SOD-123FL package which is ideal for applications with high-voltage transients.

Working Principle

When subjected to fast overvoltage pulses, the avalanche breakdown phenomenon occurs in the TVS diode, and the diode is triggered to start conduction. This phenomenon is studied in both forward and reverse bias direction, and current mainly flows in the reverse direction due to the diode\'s reverse bias under normal circumstances. When a voltage transient rises to the diode\'s breakdown voltage, a junction avalanche is created, resulting in high energy carriers in the form of electrons and holes. The combination of event transition current and avalanche current determine the diode\'s current-carrying capability. When the electrical energy exceeds the device\'s energy handling capability, its avalanche breakdown voltage decreases and overvoltage subsequently increases. The avalanche breakdown voltage of the diode can be altered by external circuit elements (varistors, capacitors, etc.) which can be used to control the energy handling of the device.In the case of the SMBJ90D-M3/H, the device is reverse-biased by 900V and conducted by the application, and is designed to prevent voltage transients. At the same time, the low capacitance of the device ensures that the device has minimum signal distortion.
