Transient voltage suppressors (TVS) diodes, also known as clamp diodes or spike suppressors, are a category of diodes used to protect sensitive electronics from surge current transients in electronic circuits. A transient is an event that varies in intensity and has a sudden onset and short duration. A surge current transient is a brief flow of high current. TVS diodes are designed to limit the voltage by controlling the flow of the transient current. The SMC5K13AHM3/H is a particularly versatile TVS diode, capable of a wide range of applications.

Description

The SMC5K13AHM3/H is configured as a unidirectional circuit element that clamps the voltage when the associated transient peak exceeds a pre-defined threshold. This transient voltage suppressor assembly consists of two active components, an x-rated filament lamp and a P-channel MOSFET. The x-rated lamp acts as the sacrificial component because it is designed to fuse instantly against surge current transients, thereby protecting the P-channel MOSFET. The P-channel MOSFET of the assembly maintains the voltage clamping function when the x-rated lamp is consumed. Its capable of limiting the surge current up to a maximum rated current of 1.2 A to protect sensitive electronics from damage.

Design

The SMC5K13AHM3/H assembly consists of two components such as an x-rated filament lamp and a P-channel MOSFET. The x-rated filament lamp is fused against transient surges up to a maximum of 1.2 A in order to protect the following MOSFET. The P-Channel MOSFET maintains the current to a safe level while the x-rated lamp is consumed by the surge. The assembly also includes four extended mounting tabs and Tin-plated contacts.
