TVS - Diodes
TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes are a special class of device that are used to protect electrical and electronic systems from damage caused by voltage transients. In particular, TVS diodes are commonly used to protect automotive and industrial electronics from transient over-voltage events, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and surge currents. The SMCJ17CA-E3/9AT is designed for use in a wide variety of automotive, telecommunications, and industrial applications, where it can protect against voltage transients of varying duration and magnitude. It is especially helpful in automotive applications, where electrical spikes caused by high-energy on/off switching, such as airbag deployment, can cause transient voltages of up to 8 kV.The SMCJ17CA-E3/9AT diode features a maximum ESD protection of 8 kV, and has a low clamping voltage of 17.3V. It has a peak pulse current rating of 340A, and a breakdown voltage of 17.3 V. The device also offers reverse leakage current of 0.1uA, and an allowable power dissipation of 4kW.The working principle of the SMCJ17CA-E3/9AT is based on the avalanche effect, in which a large electric current flows through the diode when the voltage across it exceeds a certain threshold. This effect causes the reverse-bias voltage of the diode to increase until it reaches the breakdown voltage. At this point the diode starts to conduct, and the current will divert through the diode, protecting the circuit from any further voltage transients.Thus, the SMCJ17CA-E3/9AT can be used to protect circuits from transient voltages, such as those produced through automotive and industrial applications. The device features a low clamping voltage, a high peak pulse current rating, and a low reverse leakage current, making it ideal for these kinds of applications.
