Introduction

Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes are unidirectional devices designed to protect circuits from transient overvoltage conditions. These devices are made of vapor-deposited silicon dioxide that acts as an insulator between an anode and a cathode. When the voltage across it exceeds a certain value, the TVS diode junctions become forward-biased and begins to conduct. When the voltage across it returns to its normal value, the junction reverts back to its unbiased state and the diode stops conducting.The SMCJ5.0CAHE3/9AT is a type of bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode specifically designed to protect low voltage and high current systems against electrostatic discharge (ESD) events. It features an integrated ESD protection structure embodied in a single diode package, which combines low capacitance, high breakdown voltage, and high ESD immunity.

Application Field

SMCJ5.0CAHE3/9AT is suitable for applications where ESD protection is needed. Working Principle

When the voltage applied across the junction of a TVS diode exceeds the rated breakdown voltage of the device, the electrons and holes begin to reach excess quantities within the junction. This produces an avalanche breakdown which diverts much of the current away from the protected circuit.In the event of an ESD event, the SMCJ5.0CAHE3/9AT diode begins to conduct and thereby protect from destructive currents, but the low capacitance of the diode also ensures that the ESD event does not disrupt the data signal. The diode acts as an ESD protection switch while also allowing the data transfer to proceed uninterrupted.
