The SMDA03C-8/TR7 is a member of the Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes (TVS) lineup from the electronics hardware manufacturer ON Semiconductor. It is a two-terminal diode device whose main function is to protect electronic circuits and components against electrical overstress such as lightning and switching surges. TVS diodes are particularly useful for preventing damage from electrical transients on communication and automotive circuit systems, thanks to their fast response time, low forward voltage drop and low clamping voltage.

The SMDA03C-8/TR7 in particular is an unidirectional type device, meaning it only allows current to pass through it in a single direction. The device is based on a zinc oxide (ZnO) material and features superior surge capability of 3,000 Watts at 10/1000 μs. The SMDA03C-8/TR7 is designed to offer protection against a wide range of commonly encountered transients, from transient pulses ranging from 10 to 400 Volts of pulse amplitude and from 10 to 1000 nanoseconds (ns) pulse width.

This device is housed in an 8-Pin small-outline transistor (SOT-223) package which is 1.53 millimeters high and has a thermal resistance of 92 Watts per meter-Kelvin-W (W/mK). It also has a very low leakage current of 0.1 pA (picoamperes) and has a voltage rating of 6.5 to 10 Volts. To further enhance its reliability and quality, this device is characterized for operation from -40°C to +150°C.

The primary application of the SMDA03C-8/TR7 is in transient voltage suppression. It relies on the principle that ZnO material has much higher energy levels and can absorb large amounts of surge energy. As a result, when an overvoltage occurs, the ZnO will break down and conduct current, which creates a clamping action that protects against high-voltage transients. It works by providing a low impedance path to ground for any overvoltage that enters the device. This will prevent the overvoltage from entering the protected device and causing interference, damage, or malfunction.
