SMDJ51C Application Field and Working Principle
SMDJ51C is part of a range of surface-mount Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes, designed to protect against transients and surges. These devices are designed to protect against electrostatic discharge and are used in a wide variety of applications including telecommunications, aerospace, and automotive.TVS diodes are commonly used in applications that would experience ESD or short pulses of high energy transients. The SMDJ51C is one such diode and is One of the most popular TVS diodes on the market. The diode is able to do this by responding very quickly to transients, usually within nanoseconds. This makes it a more expensive option than other diode types, but also a more reliable option.The SMDJ51C is composed of a semiconductor made up of two junctions. One junction is composed of P-type material, which is responsible for controlling the current flow, and the other junction is composed of N- type material, responsible for controlling the current movement in the opposite direction. These junctions are called thyristors. When an electrical, magnetic, or optical signal is received by the SMDJ51C, it triggers the PN junction diode into action. This in turn triggers the response to the high voltage pulse.The voltage clamping that the SMDJ51C provides is known as positive temperature coefficient (PTC). This PTC ensures that the diode will clamp the voltage at a set voltage to provide the desired protection. The voltage clamping is specified in volts (V). The higher the voltage clamping, the more secure the protection is.In addition to its protection functionalities, the SMDJ51C also provides low forward voltage drop and fast response time. The forward voltage drop is defined as the difference in voltage between the supply and ground pins when the SMDJ51C is in closed loop (ON). The response time is defined as the time taken for the TVS diode\'s full clamping voltage to be established. The SMDJ51C diode also requires minimal power consumption, making it ideal for low power applications. This power consumption is known as the quiescent or standstill current. It is specified in milliamps (mA) and is typically between 0.5 to 0.1 mA.Overall, the SMDJ51C diode is a fast-acting diode that is designed for transient voltage protection applications.
