Transient Voltage Suppressors ( TVS-diodes) are solid-state diodes specially manufactured to protect sensitive integrated circuits (ICs) from the destructive force of Electrostatic discharge (ESD). These kind of devices can be incorporated into an existing circuits as ESD protection in order to absorb extra voltages or spikes over the ordinary, expected voltages.

The SMDJ75A-T7 TVS-diode is an axial, bi-blocking, unidirectional ESD-protection diode. This diode is manufactured with 7.03mm long silicone-coated leads. It features a glass-silicone junction, anode-cathode reverse stand-off voltage of 75 volts and ESD withstand voltages up to 6000 volts.

The SMDJ75A-T7 offers excellent protection with minimum insertion loss for high frequency data lines in data processing applications. The TVS-diode is suitable in many applications thanks to its high ESD performance and its fast response to ESD pulses.

The primary purpose of the SMDJ75A-T7 is to provide protection against damage caused by Electrostatic discharge. During normal operation the diode remains inactive, but when an ESD pulse or its feedback voltage is given, the device conducts in a split-second, thereby protecting the electronic equipment connected. The response rate of the diode is high and has a very low leakage current.

The working principle of the SMDJ75A-T7 can be understood by the use of a simple electrical model. The p–n junction of the diode can be thought of as avoltage-controlled switch, with a voltage that decides the operation of theswitch. When ESD is given to the diode, the junction voltage VJ increases rapidly and causes the diode to conduct current.

Thanks to the silicon coating of the diode, it can withstand an electric field of 4000 volts per centimeter between conducting plates. This is the breakdown voltage and it drives the ESD protection ability of the device. In such case the diode will provide a soft breakdown, which shields the connected electrical/electronic device from excessive voltages apart from leaking minimal current levels.
