SMF20A RVG, also known as Unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diodes, is a device designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from harmful ESD (electrostatic discharge/surge) events. SMF20A RVG is designed for complete protection of one-way high-speed applications such as USB and HDMI. It is designed for a nominal holding voltage of 6.8V, in a 12-lead unidirectional axial package. The device is characterized by its extremely fast response time, low clamping, ESD immunity, and excellent surge protection capabilities.
The working principle of SMF20A RVG is based on the combination of a Zener diode and a unidirectional bi-directional diode structure. The Zener diode regulates and enables uniform clamping of voltage transients while the unidirectional bi-directional diode helps limit rise time, clamping voltage, and switching speed. Additionally, the low leakage current helps maintain a good ESD immunity. The device is typically a surge protector that is used in applications such as USB, HDMI, and other sensitive electronic devices.
SMF20A RVG’s are capable of withstanding repetitive high surge/ESD events with or without external ESD protection networks. It also helps protect various sensitive electronic components from high voltage transients induced by ESD strikes on devices. Additionally, the device is designed for high frequency transient voltage spikes as well as high frequency common mode surges. Additionally, the low capacitance of SMF20A RVG helps in the protection of sensitive analog signals that cannot tolerate high capacitances.
