TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes are used for protecting sensitive electronics, wiring and equipment from fault conditions such as short circuit, line voltage surges, lightning surge and electrostatic discharge. The SMF9V0A-E3-08 TVS diode is suitable for general-purpose overvoltage protection applications. It provides an efficient solution to protect the system from ESD, lightning and other surges.

The SMF9V0A-E3-08 comes with a low profile SMD package featuring an isolated back with a ruggedized encapsulation. The TVS diode is constructed with a P-N junction of silicon, which is highly reliable in situations where it is exposed to large voltage transients. It also features ultra-low capacitance, low leakage, high ESD withstand performance and peak pulse power capability.

The working principle of SMF9V0A-E3-08 is based on the PN junction. When subjected to a large hard transient or surge, this diode is triggered to open, thereby limiting the surge voltage to a safe level. In normal conditions, the PN junction of the diode is in its non-conductive state. When voltage reaches its breakdown limit it becomes conductive, allowing current to flow through the diode. This limit is known as the ‘clamping voltage’. When the transient or surge is over, the junction returns to its non-conductive state.

The clamping voltage of SMF9V0A-E3-08 is 7.5V, which means it can clamp a voltage up to 7.5V. Its power dissipation is 5W and peak power can be up to 6.7kW @10μs. The peak pulse power can be higher in duration of 10x1000μs. Additionally, the ESD protection level is very high at 20kV contact.
