Working Principle

The SML4755A-E3/61 operates through a process of Zener breakdown, in which the electric field generated along the junction of the P-N junction of the diode, when the voltage reaches a certain level, exceeds the dielectric resistance which generates an avalanche breakdown, releasing large amounts of electric energy.

In simplified terms, when a voltage is applied across the device, it will conduct in the reverse direction of the current flow when the P-N junction is above the breakdown voltage. This reverse current flow then produces a voltage drop across the device and acts to stabilize the voltage at this point. This effect can be used for any number of applications, such as regulating the output voltage of a power supply, voltage monitoring, wave shaping and peak clipping.

The SML4755A-E3/61 also has excellent temperature coefficient characteristics, which makes it excellent for use in temperature sensing applications. By using temperature sensing technology, the device can be used to measure temperature without the need for any additional components, saving both cost and space.
