TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) Diodes are solid-state devices which provide protection against undesirable electrical transients such as ESD (Electrostatic Discharge), lightning, and inductive switching events. TVS diodes are electrically similar to zener diodes but are designed to handle high energy transient events with very fast response times. One example of a TVS diode is the SMLJ58CA-QH.

The SMLJ58CA-QH is a bidirectional diode with good surge energy capability and very low leakage current. It supports a non-repetitive peak pulse power of 8.1KW (8.1 kilowatts) and has a clamping voltage of 48V. The ESD rating, tested to IEC 61000-4-2, is 25KV and it offers protection against reverse polarity. Its 25KV is tenth highest ESD-withstood voltage for 750W,2μs. It provides common mode surge performance up to 10KW in 4/10μs with a very low leakage current.
