TVS-varistors, MOVs, are dual types of devices typically used for overvoltage protection. The SMOV25S111NP device is a three-terminal transient voltage suppressor of this category that helps protect sensitive electronic equipment in telecommunications, industrial and domestic applications. The device is designed to act as a shunt clamping device, responding quickly to any transient overvoltage on the power supply lines and providing protection from surges induced by lightning or electromagnetic interference.
The SMOV25S111NP SPD (Surge Protection Device) is attached downstream of the main breakers to provide protection from transient overvoltages coming in from the mains. A surge protector is similar to a fuse, except that it provides medium-term protection and can reset itself after the surge event has passed. It is a three-terminal device with two fixed terminals and one variable terminal.
The SMOV25S111NP overvoltage surge suppressor operates on the principle of "transient voltage suppression". When the input voltage rises above the device\'s limit, the energy is transferred into a low impedance path which then impedes the destruction of the delicate circuitry. All the electrical energy in the voltage is released before it reaches the system\'s sensitive components.
This mechanism of surge protection works as a voltage clamp which efficiently diverts the input current away from the protected circuitry. The device has an internal "thermal clamp" which limits the amount of current flowing through it. The internal thermal clamp is designed to absorb the significant amount of energy contained in the transient voltage and detect the overvoltage by its resulting temperature. Once the temperature drops below the critical level, the device automatically responds again.
The SMOV25S111NP device is designed to respond to both rapidly and slowly rising transient voltages, such as electrostatic discharges or fast or slow rise time impulses. It provides a reliable high peak current and peak clamping voltage protection and ensures a low let through voltage even under extreme transient overvoltages. The device also operates in a wide temperature range and delivers a high level of protection from major and minor power line disturbances. It uses a silicon-oxide film structure that is highly resistant to damage, providing a high level of protection in extreme overvoltage conditions. The device also provides protection against over-currents and short-circuits.
The SMOV25S111NP device is used to protect both AC and DC powered systems from transient overvoltages. Its applications include industrial machinery and systems, data communication systems, medical equipment, precision instrumentation and measurement equipment, and other sensitive electronic applications. With its high level of surge protection and wide temperature range it is an ideal choice for environments in which there is a high risk of overvoltage damage. It is also suitable for large-scale installations where multiple devices are needed to provide protection.
