SMP12-M3/84A Working Principle

The SMP12-M3/84A is a monolithic TVS diode, which means that it consists of two chips that are bonded together. The two chips are the anode and cathode. The anode is the positive voltage terminal and the cathode is the negative voltage terminal. The anode is connected to the power supply and the cathode is connected to the load. When a transient voltage is applied to the anode, the diode begins to clamp the voltage by allowing a current to flow between the anode and cathode. This current is limited by the breakdown voltage of the diode (12V). The current is then clamped at the maximum clamping voltage (19.5V). This ensures that the voltage across the load does not exceed the maximum clamping voltage and prevents any damage to the circuit from the transient voltage.
