SMP30-220: TVS – Thyristors Application Field and Working Principle

Thyristors, also known as Silicon-Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) or Surprising Unijunction Transistors (SETs), are a family of power semiconductor devices that includes a variety of three-terminal, bidirectional switches, as well as a variety of rectifiers. Thyristors are used in a wide range of applications from motor control to power rectification and protection. One example of a thyristor is the SMP30-220. This article will discuss the application field and the working principle of the SMP30-220.The SMP30-220 is a high-speed, high-frequency, low-loss silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) designed for AC or DC power switching applications covering voltages up to 220V and currents up to 220A. Inside the package, there are three terminals, the anode, the cathode, and the gate. When there is no current passing through the device, the switch is “off” and no current can flow. However, when a small current is passed through the gate terminal, it causes the device to turn on and allows current to flow through the anode to the cathode. This operation is called “turning on the switch” and is known as the firing process.The SMP30-220 thyristor also offers several advantages over other devices, such as its ability to withstand voltage surges, its low power loss, and its extremely low temperature rise. These features make it an ideal choice for many industries, including automobile, aircraft, and power converter applications.From an electrical standpoint, thyristors are composed of two switching devices: a thyristor and two diac versions. A thyristor is a three-terminal, bidirectional switching device which works in accordance with the firing command sent from the gate terminal. In the SMP30-220 thyristor, the two diodes we mention are actually a pair of two serially connected diodes called “diacs”. The SMP30-220 thyristor also has active thermic protection which ensures that the device does not overheat and cause operation failures.The SMP30-220 thyristor also has an integrated resistor which is used to reduce the length of the firing pulse. This helps to reduce the voltage across the device and reduce losses during the firing process.
