Working Principle
The SMTPA200 is a semiconductor device with two PN-junctions and two terminals. The two terminals are a cathode and an anode, which are connected to a positive and a negative voltage supply respectively, and an outer gate electrode. When a positive signal is applied to the gate electrode, it causes electrons to flow from the anode to the cathode, closing the two PN-junctions and allowing current to flow through the thyristor. When the gate signal is removed, the current will continue to flow until the voltage across the two electrodes drops below a certain threshold. This is known as latching. The voltage threshold level can be adjusted by varying the critical voltage level via a voltage divider connected to the gate electrode. This allows the user to fine-tune the switching performance of the device.In applications requiring high-voltage switching, the SMTPA200 can be combined with a high-voltage driver such as an MOSFET. The MOSFET provides the necessary voltage boost to activate the thyristor. Additionally, the SMTPA200 series can also be combined with a variety of protection devices to further enhanced the protection and longevity of the thyristor. A crowbar circuit or gate resistor can be connected to the gate electrode to limit voltage transients, while current-limiting resistors can be connected to the anode and cathode to limit the maximum current.Conclusion
