The SMTPA270 is part of a family of thyristors commonly referred to as TVS – Thyristor Voltage-Sensed. With the SMTPA270 being the largest in the family, this component is popular for application in solar cells and wind power plants. It is perfect for use in power electronics, mining and oil and gas industries.

Thyristor voltage-sensing devices like the SMTPA270 work in an off-to-on mode. These devices sense and react to signals from a power supply, such as a solar cell or a wind turbine, to activate or deactivate its own switching mechanism. When the power supply provides a low voltage signal, the thyristors will remain off until the signal reaches a pre-determined level, then it will activate and turn on the power supply.

SMTPA270 uses a two-terminal sensing anode and a four-terminal, integrated gate to shut off the power supply when the voltage reaches a certain level. This is a bipolar thyristor device, which means that it has both a positive and negative gate, allowing the device to sense and react to both positive and negative voltages. The four-terminal, integrated gate keeps the device in an on/off position, depending on the current/voltage that is applied.

Controlling the output of the SMTPA270, as well as, other thyristor voltage-sensing devices, is done with the use of a controlling circuit, in which the input is governed by a switch or some other signal source.
