The SMTYF5.0A is a TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from voltage spikes caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), inductive loads, lightning or other transient over-voltage events. This versatile device is available in both surface-mount and thru-hole packages and is designed to protect downstream components in a wide range of applications.
The SMTYF5.0A has ultra-low capacitance of just 3pF, making it ideal for signal line protection applications as it has virtually no effect on data transmission signals. It can handle large surge current pulses up to 6A (10/1000 μs waveform) and is capable of dissipating up to 500Watts of power when connected in a suitable diode array or strip configuration.
The SMTYF5.0A has an operating voltage range of 5.0 to 85.0V, making it suitable for higher voltage applications in fixed and variable voltage systems. It also features two zener diode breakdowns which ensure that the device will remain off until the reverse voltage exceeds a certain threshold. This threshold varies depending on the device being used; for the SMTYF5.0A it is 70.5V.
