The SN0305042RTHR (hereinafter referred to as SN042) is a clock buffer, driver and fanout device manufactured by NXP Semiconductors. It is a 3-2 driver which is optimized to drive DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 memory systems, as well as other low power high speed signaling applications. The device is small and slim, with a 12-pin small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package. It is also power efficient, with a 0.44 µA static current consumption.
The SN042 supports up to three different input and output clock frequencies, with output frequencies ranging from 13 MHz to 667 MHz. The input frequency range is from 2 MHz to 309 MHz. The SN042 features a power-on reset (POR) function, which provides for a graceful enable/disable cycle with a 50 ms enable/disable time. This device also has both an output enable (OE) feature, and a programmable output delay. The OE feature allows for control of the output stages within the device with an external signal. While the programmable output delay allows the user to synchronize the output signals with the data signals of the system.
The SN042 provides a differential input ±5% duty cycle clock signal, and produces a differential output ±5% duty cycle clock signal. It has differential outputs, which can be driven by either internal or external logic. The outputs have excellent signal integrity, noise rejection, and jitter performance, making it suitable for driving high speed memory systems. It is also compatible with SERDES (serializer/deserializer) systems, past and present, such as DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5. It is also a fully valid low power solution for the memory bus.
The working principle of the SN042 involves a differential input clock signal being received and converted into a differential output clock signal. The device consists of a high-swing output amplifier, an input receiver amplifier, an analog phase-locked loop circuit, and an adjusting circuit. The high-swing output amplifier uses feedback logic to control the output signal, while the input receiver amplifier amplifies, tracks, and adjusts the input signal. The analog phase-locked loop circuit consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator, a phase/frequency detector, a charge pump and a loop filter, whose combination ensures that the output signal is equivalent to the input signal, with the correct delay and jitter.
The SN042\'s adjusting circuit allows for manual fine-tune control of several parameters, including the delay and the jitter. This fine-tune control helps ensure that the input and output signals are in sync. The SN042 can be used in a wide range of applications, from consumer electronic video systems to system-level clock distribution applications. It is also suitable for networking and telecommunications applications, where low jitter and low power requirements are essential.
The SN0305042RTHR is a powerful and power-efficient clock buffer, driver, and fanout device which is suitable for a variety of high-speed and low-power signaling applications. It is capable of providing up to three different input and output clock frequencies, with a wide operating range. It also has excellent signal integrity, noise rejection, and jitter performance. In addition, it features an output enable (OE) and a programmable output delay, adding flexibility to the device. The SN042 is the clock buffer, driver, and fanout device of choice for many applications, including consumer electronics, system-level clock distribution, and networking and telecommunications.
