The SN74AHCT123A is a monolithic device belonging to the family of logic multivibrators. It is one of the most widely used components in the multitude of digital circuits and logic systems. This dual, retriggerable, monostable multivibrator is designed to be highly reliable and low-cost. It is used in a wide range of applications, including multiplexed latches, clocked memories, rotary switches, piezo electric transducers, robotics, and voltage-controlled oscillators.The SN74AHCT123A is designed to operate as a standard monostable multivibrator, and its two main advantages are that it can be triggered multiple times, producing a pulse duration close to its theoretical maximum, and that the module can be initiated with either a positive or negative edge from an input signal. The module has two entering logicports, A and B, and two outputs, Q and Q that produce monostable pulses on the rising edge of an input signal.A high voltage at either of the two inputs, A or B, will cause a logic-low pulse at one of the two outputs, and a logic-high pulse at the other. However, if both A and B are high simultaneously, nothing will happen at the outputs and the module will remain in its stable state.The length of the pulse is determined by the external resistor, R, and the external capacitor, C, connected between the Gnd pin and the Ct pin. The delay between the rising edge of the incoming signal, and the rising edge of the output signal is proportional to the product of R and C, and is called the propagation delay.The SN74AHCT123A is also very useful for the generation of clocks for digital circuits. In the application of clock frequency dividers, clock signals are divided by two by conditioning the module to ignore the signal transition at the input.Not only can the module be used to generate pulses of fixed duration, it can also be used as an oscillator. In its operating as an oscillator, the module is triggered by an input signal once, and then oscillates at a frequency determined by R and C. By using a different value of R, different types of oscillating frequencies can be generated.The SN74AHCT123A is also used in interrupt systems, where it is necessary to generate a one-shot pulse on a rising edge of a signal, while the signal is still present. When the signal goes away after the rising edge, the pulse is completed in the typical RC exponential manner.The SN74AHCT123A also has a wide variety of other applications, such as driving LED display drivers, automotive tamper detectors, and for monitoring external circuits for frequency variations.Due to its versatility and ease of use, the SN74AHCT123A has become a highly reliable and low cost solution for a variety of applications.
