SN74AHCT158PW Application Field and Working PrincipleThe SN74AHCT158PW is a high speed, low power, quadruple 2-input multiplexer with the outputs connected directly to CMOS level shifters. This device consists of two sets each of two independent 2-input multiplexer, one with NOR-open-drain logic output and one with NAND open-drain logic output. Sn74AHCT158PW has a high OFF-state output impedance and guaranteed data retention for 20V and are optimized for low voltage (1.65V to 5.5V)operation. This device is designed to pass data from two data sources to two destinations, making it ideal for applications that require multiplexing between two buses, as well as analog multiplexing.ApplicationSn74AHCT158PW can be used as a logic signal switch, multiplexer or decoder in many applications including communication systems, process control systems, power supplies, digital logic designs and instrumentation. This device can also be used for 2-wire interface communication, such as an RS-232 or RS-485 communication interface. This device is also suitable for low-power, low-voltage applications that require multiplexing between two buses, or analog multiplexing, such as in voltage monitoring systems or in boost converters.Working PrincipleThis device is composed of two sets each of two independent 2-input multiplexers and one with NAND open-drain logic output. The Sn74AHCT158PW utilizes the Schmitt Trigger concept, wherein two inverters are connected back to back with the input of one connected to the output of the other. This allows the device to distinguish between the logic ‘high’ and ‘low’ levels, providing better signal stability and intrinsic noise immunity. In low power applications, the device is also designed to recover quickly following power down. The operation of the device is binary. Select signal determines, by channel switching, between the two data sources. When the select signal, S1 and S2, is high, the data from the ‘A’ input is routed to the output; when the select signal is low, the data from the ‘B’ input is routed to the output. The logic level at the output node is determined by the logic level at the input node for that channel, i.e., a low level at the input will result in a low level at the output. Force enable signal, ENABLE, allows data to be routed from the ‘B’ input to the output when the enable signal is low. This feature is ideal for testing applications where the ‘B’ input may represent the control signal and requires special treatment of the enable signal in order to route the data to the output. Additionally, Sn74AHCT158PW has an output enable signal to disable the output of one or both channels and an active low enable signal to enable one or both channels. This signal can be used to individually enable/disable the output of each channel, allowing for a low-power power-down state. The SN74AHCT158PW also supports multiplexing between wide voltage levels 1.6V to 5.5V and can drive up to 12mA of current on the output.
