Working principle: The SN74AHCT374PW operates as a standard positive-edge triggered flip-flop with Schmitt trigger based input stages. The device consists of seven stages of inverter based input stages connected to a two-input Exclusive-OR gate. The inputs are differential signals. The first stage of the inverter is a NAND gate while the second stage is a NOR gate. The differential signal is generated by an external clock. The clock signal is usually a square wave signal with a positive edge which triggers the flip-flop.
When the differential inputs to the NAND and NOR gates change state, the output of the Exclusive-OR gate is driven in the opposite direction. At the moment when the clock transitions to a HIGH logic level, the output of the Exclusive-OR gate is driven to the HIGH state. Then the stored data from the previous state is held or stored in the flip-flop. The output remains at the HIGH state until the clock transitions to a LOW logic level.
The device can be configured as a standard J-K flip-flop by tying a J input to ground. When the J input is LOW, the clock triggers the flip-flop, and the output is changed to the opposite of the input previous state. When the J input is HIGH, the device operates in Toggle mode, and the state of the output changes with each cycle of the clock.
The device is also available in a low-power version, the SN74AHCT374LPW, with lower power consumption which makes it ideal for battery operated applications. The device is designed to reduce total power consumption and minimize consequences of operations in case of power supply interruptions.
