Logic shift registers are digital circuits that store binary information based on a shift register configuration. Shift registers come in two varieties: parallel registers, which store and output data in parallel; and serial registers, which store and output data in serial. The SN74ALS166DR is an 8-bit parallel-in/serial-out shift register, ideal for interfacing to low-voltage storage devices. The SN74ALS166DR contains an 8-bit shift register, as well as complementary outputs for each bit. It can also be used to increase storage capacity from 8 bits to 16 bits.The SN74ALS166DR is one of Texas Instruments’ most popular logic-shift registers. It features low-voltage shift register characteristics, which are ideal for interfacing low-voltage storage devices, such as random-access memory (RAM), erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM), and electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). It also has a simple eight-pin dual in-line package (DIP) format and is designed to withstand industrial temperature ranges.The SN74ALS166DR can be used in a variety of applications, including bus transceivers, memory expanders, interfacing to microprocessors and microcontrollers, and providing address decoding and latching functions. Additionally, it can be used to create high-speed serial-to-parallel conversions and parallel-to-serial conversions.The SN74ALS166DR includes an 8-bit serial-in/serial-out shift register with strobed outputs. This means that data is transferred from the data inputs (D7-D0) to the output pins (Q7-Q0) after the strobe input goes high. It also includes an asynchronous reset (RS) pin, which can be used to reset the register to all logic “0” data outputs.Additionally, the SN74ALS166DR includes a latch enable input (LE), which can be used to control the output data. When the latch enable input is active, the outputs of the shift register become latched and are available at the outputs. When the latch enable becomes inactive, the outputs become insensitive to the data input signals and remain unchanged until the latch enable goes active again.The SN74ALS166DR also has two serial input pins (DIN and SI). The data input pin (DIN) is used when the register is operated in serial-mode. When the register is operated in serial mode, data is serially shifted into the register through the DIN pin, and can be shifted out of the register through the serial output pin (SO). The shift/load enable pin (SL) is used to control the operation of the register. When SL is low, the data is shifted in and out of the register. When SL is high, the data is loaded into the register.The SN74ALS166DR is a widely used and highly versatile logic shift register made by Texas Instruments.
