Modern electronic devices are packed with integrated circuits (IC) which follow a design specification and help in processing signals, computations or controlling other IC’s. SN74ALS32D is one such IC which falls under the low power Schottky family and is used in a variety applications.

The SN74ALS32D is a quad 2-input OR gate. It has four 2-input OR gates in a single package and its pin configuration is in the form of SOP-14 with its power supply ranging from 3 V to 5 V. A schematic representation of OR gate is shown in the figure below.

OR logic gate is a combination of two input signals, A and B, with output being the logical OR of inputs A and B. In other words, the output of a two input OR gate is high if either A, B or both are high. If both inputs are low, then the output is low. OR gate has the summing behavior, that is, the output is the sum of inputs, potentially with some carry, that is, input levels may carry all the way through to the output, hence the term OR gate.

SN74ALS32D is composed of four independent, 2-input OR gates, each of which performs the logic OR function. The truth table of OR gate is given below.

The working principle of OR logic gate is simple. It has two input signals, A and B, with output being the logical OR of inputs A and B. In other words, the output of a two input OR gate is high if either A, B or both are high. This is the summing operation of OR gate. It can be represented using the Boolean equation.

This addition is done using two transistors, as shown in the figure below. The two transistors work as a buffer, that is, they amplify the signals. Thus, the OR gate works as an amplifier, with the two transistors providing input signals and the output being the logical OR of the inputs.
