The SN74ALS561AN is a binary counter because it can count to at most 2^N (where N is the number of bits). It is particularly suitable for low-power applications and is used in applications such as RFID and sensor network applications. Function and Working principle of SN74ALS561AN

The SN74ALS561AN is a synchronous binary counter and is a circuit that can count up to 2^N, where N is the number of bits of the counter. It has four synchronous counters with initial counts of “0000”.The SN74ALS561AN has three control inputs, which are apreset/clear input (T), a clock input (C) and an up/down control input (U/D). The T control input is used for resetting the counter to all – zero state. The C control input is used for entering a new count, and the U/D control input is used to set the counter to count up or down.

When the U/D input is set to the “1” level, the counter will count up. When the U/D input is set to the “0” level, the counter will count down. At the same time, the T and C control inputs are used to control the timing of the counting process. When the T control input is at the “1” level, the clear signal is given and the count is reset to all –zero state. The C control input is used to control the clock pulse, in other words, to control the counting tempo.

The SN74ALS561AN also has an asynchronous reset to the all - zero state. This is done by setting the preset/clear input (T) to the “1” level. When the clock input (C) is at the “1” level and the U/D control input is set to the “1” level, the counter will count up by one. The SN74ALS561AN has four outputs (Q3,Q2,Q1,Q0) for counting up to 2^4 (16).
