The SN74AS74A-DR is a dual-stage J-K master-slave flip-flop. The SN74AS74A-DR is a high-speed, dual-stage J-K master-slave flip-flop designed for use in applications where a single flip-flop can be employed to acquire data, store information, or control synchronous operations. In addition, the SN74AS74A-DR contains logic circuitry that can be used to control the output stage. This logic mode allows the flip-flop to control on-off functions or to reset, reset/enable, or enable asynchronously.
The SN74AS74A-DR, when used in the asynchronous reset (formerly known as the "clear") mode, can detect and hold inputs. The asynchronous reset, which can be activated by providing the reset (R) pin with a low level input, will latch the Q output of the flip-flop in the low level state, regardless of the previous state of either input. Thus, the reset (R) pin can be used to control the reset of the flip-flop, as well as its output.
The SN74AS74A-DR can also be used in synchronous operation in the set/reset (former clear/set) mode. In this mode, the reset (R) pin controls the set (S) pin. When the R pin is low and the S pin is low, the output of the flip-flop will be low. When the R pin is high and the S pin is low, the output of the flip-flop will be low. When the R pin is low and the S pin is high, the output of the flip-flop will become high. When both pins are high, the output of the flip-flop will remain in the same state it was prior to the change in the two pins.
In addition to its reset and set logic operations, the SN74AS74A-DR can also be used as a latching device. When used in the latching mode, the clock (C) pin can be used to control the output state of the flip-flop. When the rising edge of the clock pulse is received, the data on the J and K pins will be latched into the flip-flop and the operation of the flip-flop completes. Latching similarities can also be observed in other flip-flops, such as the D type flip-flop.
The SN74AS74A-DR is also a synchronous operation device and can be used to control the speed of synchronous operations. When both the K and R pins are high, the timing of the flip-flop can be used to determine when the output of the flip-flop will be enabled or disabled; depending on the state of the K pin. This is a unique method of controlling the speed of operations, as it is not dependant on the outside world (clock frequency), but is dependant on the internal state of the flip-flop.
