The SN74F299NS is a four-bit bidirectional shift register with synchronous input and output, which belongs to the logic - shift registers category. It is one of the SN74F297 family’s members, which also has four-bit bidirectional registers and Bidirectional universal shift registers.

All the data outputs can be used in parallel-out mode or in slowest shift-out mode or in faster shift- out mode. The input and output controls allow programmed lockup. It also has a TEST Output which allows other data to be shifted into the register than enters through the data inputs.

The SN74F299NS can be used in a wide variety of applications like Shift Register, Universal Shift Register, Binary Counter, Counter Control Applications, Interfacing and Data Conversion. The working principle of SN74F299NS is based on Load, Clock and Shift. Input data is loaded paralleling into the register on a positive clock transition, from the input pins DS1 to DS4. Then, when the Data Output Control (DOC) is high, the loaded data is shifted to the left on the negative clock transition. All data is shifted out in the reverse order compared to that loaded. An active low preshift signal at the Clear direction will terminate further shifting. In the Lock-up state the data loaded is fixed and the register remain insensitive to data and clock.
