SN74HC4020 is a Monolithic, CMOS, Multi-stage counter. It is a highly integrated and powerful frequency dividing circuit, offering a versatile design that can meet a broad range of applications. It consists of two synchronous, four-stage binary counters and has a Clock (CLK) input and an active HIGH Reset (MR) input. The SN74HC4020 has one Output Control (OC) output, four Gated Outputs (G1-G4), four Clock input dividers (C1-C4) and 16 independent outputs (Q0-Q15). The G1-G4 can be used to provide a single pulse per Clock pulse, while the C1-C4 inputs can be used to divide the input clock frequency.The SN74HC4020 operates over a wide operating temperature range of 0°C to 70°C, and it is a good choice for applications that require a highly accurate and reliable frequency dividing circuit. The SN74HC4020 offers the highest level of performance with low power consumption, high speed, low noise and low cost.The SN74HC4020 has many applications, including data storage, pulse/frequency generation, audio/video processing, data acquisition and generation, pattern generation and recognition, etc. It is also used in logic level modulation and signal conditioning circuits.In order to understand the working principle of the SN74HC4020, we must first examine the basic operation of the circuit. There are two main aspects of operation: Synchronous counting and Out-of-Sequence counting. In synchronous counting, the clock signal is fed directly into the Clock Input (CLK) of the SN74HC4020. This clock input is further divided internally by the Clock Divider (C1-C4) input. Depending on the clock signal, the Clock Divider (C1-C4) will divide the input signal by values 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32. The divided signal will then be divided into four stages of four bits: Q0-Q3, Q4-Q7, Q8-Q11, and Q12-Q15. These four stages of four bits create a sixteen bit counter.This counter is a binary up-counting type of operation with its output sequence as follows: Q0-15, Q1-14, Q2-13, etc. When the input clock signal transitions from LOW to HIGH, the counter actuates its first state and the output is Q0-Q15. When it rises to the next level, the output is Q1-Q14, and so on until it reach the last level which corresponds to Q15-Q0.The other aspect of operation is referred to as Out-of-Sequence counting. This allows the SN74HC4020 to output a 4 bit binary signal. This signal can be used as a output control signal and can be useful in a variety of applications.The SN74HC4020 features 6 outputs in total: the Output Control signal, G1-G4, and the 16 outputs of Q0-Q15. The G1-G4 signals output a single pulse for each Clock pulse. The Output Control signal can be used to give a 4 bit signal that will reset the counter to Q1-Q14 when it reaches its maximum value or to any other value that is programmed into the counter.By taking advantage of the two aspects of operation, the SN74HC4020 offers flexibility and performance in frequency dividing applications.
