The SN74LS148D is an 8-bit priority encoder circuit, commonly deployed in digital circuits, using multiplexers, decoders and logic-signal switches. It can determine which one of its inputs is present, as well as its priority. Every time the conditions of the input signals change, the output signals regenerate, shifting the priority of activated inputs. In this way, the SN74LS148D allows multiple signals to input the same signal, where only the highest-priority one routes to the output.

The two types of logic states employed in the SN74LS148D are ‘Low Logic’, which is represented by 0V and ‘High Logic’, represented by the power supply voltage. The output logic state ‘High’—indicated when a HIGH logic input exists on either of the 8 inputs—will shift if a higher priority input is generated on any of the other inputs. Likewise should the priority of a HIGH logic on an input shift down, the output state will shift accordingly. These transitions take place while output remains enabled since both the enable inputs are in the HIGH logic state.
The SN74LS148D employs a priority enable-parallel load system which controls output sequence. All input lines should be loaded at one time. A negative-going edge at either or both of the enable pins (E1 or E2) will cause the loaded data to show up in the Data Output Line. Whenever the enable pins reach a HIGH logic state, the data loaded will remain as valid data at Data Output Line.
The working principle of the SN74LS148D is based on a priority system which makes the highest priority input line take precedence over the other. When two or more input lines are set to HIGH state or logic one, the output line (B) will be equal to one, indicating the highest-level priority line. The other input line output status can be determined if Enabl is grounded, and the output line (A) indicates the second-level priority state.
