What is SN74LS161ADG4

SN74LS161ADG4 is a synchronous 4-bit decade counter manufactured by Texas Instruments. It belongs to the family of synchronous data-latch counters and dividers, which use positive-edge triggered Flip-Flops that form the information latches to store data from the last clock cycle.

Application Field

The SN74LS161ADG4 uses a synchronous design to divide the input frequency by two, four, eight, or sixteen. This makes it applicable for use whenever frequency division is necessary, for instance in frequency measurement, clock and timing applications, motor speed control, and display applications. SN74LS161ADG4 can also be used for digital counting applications, from counting cycles in an industrial production line, to tracking the number of people that walked into an entrance.

Working Principle and Features

The counter has three modes of operation. In the modulo-16 count mode, the counter cycles through the sixteen states as it counts up, and loads the initial counter value on the fourth clock cycle. In modulo-10 count, the counter load the initial counter value on a ten cycle basis, and the final two bits are discarded. Lastly, in the Preset Load Mode, the counter is preset to the initial counter value from the inputs.The counter has four buffered output stages that enable it to interface itself directly with other logic systems, utilizing fan-out and drive capability. For example, the counter can drive up to 20 LSTTL loads with up to 3 LS loads.The operating temperature range of the chip is between 0° and 70°C, and the power supply voltage range is 4.75 and 5.25V. The maximum power dissipation is 350mW, and the chip has an open-collector output structure with a maximum sink current of 16mA, and a maximum source current of 1mA. The SN74LS161ADG4 was released to market in 1995 as a successor to the SN74LS160AD, and was meant to provide a higher level of integration. It is one of the more popular synchronous counters, due to its reliability and price.
